For the time being I'll keep dual posting everything here till most folks who watch this have moved over to my new journal.. [info]mitternachtwulf

I stepped on a scale this morning and was fairly disgusted.. I've lost about 30 pounds due to muscle atrophy, mostly in the broken leg.. >.<

Though on the positive side, I've regained a large range of motion in my knee and the bone is mostly healed. The gap between the broken ends has been bridged by soft tissue, now the long term healing of building that back into hard bone can take place.

I'm more mobile now, I picked up a pair of crutches just today.

My new job is going very well. I'm getting the hang of it very quickly, and everyone there seems to like me.

So, I got my note from the doctor in the mail saying that I'm all messed up. cloverr and I made a stop at the DMV and got my cripple permit. Now I can use the good parking spots.

My leg has been healing up fairly quick since the motorcycle crash and resulting surgery. it's only been four weeks and I'm already up to 100 degrees of bend in my knee. The worst of the pain seems to be over with as well.

I had my two week post op doctor visit today.

Things are looking good. The x-rays show the bone is in place, and the titanium rod has the correct position. there is strong evidence of the bones knitting back together.

I got the go ahead to remove the suture staples from the surgery incisions. the nurse started to do the first one, but I decided to take over.

I'm off the Vicodin now, and just back to the normal OTC pain killers.

I have a 30 pound weight restriction on my injured leg, with orders to continue physical therapy.

I had a knock at the door.
So I had to go through the trouble of pants and getting my broke leg ass into the wheel chair.
it was a rather insistent knock.
Fucking Mormons.
but, there was some entertainment value here.

-Got them to tell me where they lived. (near Vernon BC) and through some twisting, he thinks I know where his house is. the other one was from Idaho.

-Used them as slave labor. "bring that green lawnmower around here"

-Made it very difficult to get a word in edgewise about faith. he made it to "of later day saints."

-Questioned the worth of a mission in southern baptist land, along with fun little facts "ya know, most of the bible thumpers around here wouldn't know any better if you said Joan of Arc was Noah's wife" ( http://www.harpers.org/archive/2005/08/0080695 )

-Tempted them with cool wet refreshing beer on a hot muggy southern sunny day.

-Warned them about the neighborhoods surrounding that "don't go x or y direction. you'll get shot"

-Talked about body piercings, specifically my prince Albert and how it sets off the metal detectors at airports.

They were trying to edge away, but they had so much politeness crammed in there mailable little heads that they couldn't make it down past the first step..

Well, I got out of the hospital last Saturday, and I've been home for a week now. I can tell a bit of improvement every day, getting back range of motion, swelling going down, not needing the pain killers and such.

The hard parts are never being able to get comfortable and having to need so much help for little things.

So, now I have a permanent titanium rod in my leg, from my kneecap to my hip. From what I understand, there were several small incisions made, the bone was aligned, my knee cap and ligaments were pushed to the side, and the rod was driven in from the end with a hammer and secured from the side with a screw gun. A delicate surgical procedure this is not.

I have a bit of soreness from my right shoulder and neck but that's getting better as well.

So, here's a friends list poll. What's the worst injury you've ever had?

Russ was moved to another room last night, he's in Room 536 now.

He started physical therapy yesterday--getting up from bed, sitting up, and taking a few steps with a walker.

Hopefully he'll be released today (or tomorrow) depending on when he's able to maneuver the walker and himself a bit more. He's still got a bit of a post op fever, and obviously is weak and hurting--but he's recovering as well as can be expected. Bones take 10-12 weeks to heal; he'll be using the walker for 4-6 weeks.

He had some visitors stop by briefly yesterday, some of his friends (Snappy Tiger, Shadow, etc) who are in town for RCFM. THANKS guys! Thanks to Tom for helping us retrieve Russ' car from out at the motorcycle shop. (Which means we've finally got our cell phone back too)

I went out to dinner with Susie and Spectra, and brought Russ back some real food--a couple pieces of sushi and some udon noodles. He doesn't have much appetite right now, but he appreciated the thought.

Well, I need to get back to house cleaning (as I need to remove our usual obstacle course from the floor) and then I'm off to the hospital.

Russ made it through surgery fine. He was pretty groggy and sleepy when they brought him back to his room afterwards; I expect he'll want to talk to folks and friends more tomorrow.

If anyone wants to call or visit, he's in Room 332.

This is cloverr, posting for netwolf. Russ had a motorcycle accident last night and is in the hospital with a broken leg.

He was taking a little ("just for fun" ) test ride on a motorcycle yesterday afternoon at the Harley dealer's, spun out and laid the bike down. He's a little scraped up on one arm, has hairline fractures on the outer part of two lower neck bones (NOT serious--they will heal, just stiff and sore), and a fractured right femur that he's having surgery on today. They are putting a steel rod in the leg (for new bone to grow around) and he'll have a 2-3 day hospital stay before coming home. He's hurting a lot, but we're so glad it wasn't any worse.

(He says he still wants to go to RCFM this weekend -and see how much porn he can get drawn on his cast- but we'll see what he actually feels up to doing)

We spent several hours in the emergency room before Russ got moved up to Orthopedics last night. Demerol made him sick, so he's on Moprhine for the pain. Tom and Cara came by to lend their support--THANK YOU! I stayed overnight at the hospital with him.

I took today off work, but will probably work the remainder of week; our friend Cara said she'd keep Russ company in the hospital. His bosses seemed concerned; they said "he works for us, he's "family"--which I hope means he'll still have a job when he recovers.

He's in Huntsville Hospital. I do not know which room he will be in after surgery.

AS I said, it could have been owrse, but we sure didn't need this right now!

That's the brief. Wish him a speedy recovery.

I made a last minuet decision to ride up to central TN with a local dragon friend to work a motorsports event.

http://www.rallytennessee.com/2007/

They were in desperate need of ham radio operators for the event. (they would have canceled if they didn't have enough show up)
It was a great time. I worked a start/finish line for one section, and then moved to another stage for the afternoon session.
I learned quite a bit about operating on a radio net which I expect will come in useful.

I had another bit of excitement when a competitor rolled up to the time station and caught fire right in front of us.. He had a pressure gauge on his fuel rail and it blew out, leaking petrol onto the cherry red manifold. the co-driver was still tangled in his harness so I got the fire bottle from him and gave it a squirt after the driver got the hood open (you're the one wearing nomex gloves there, buddy).we got it out before any real damage was done. after a quick field repair he was able to limp to the pits.

One of the bigger problems during the morning was being so low in the terrain that it was near impossible to get a signal out.. we ended up finally contacting another station and doing relay to net control. I had a loaner 60W 2M radio to a 5/8ths copper J pole up 25-30 ft and it was still fuzzy to the relay, couldn't touch or hear net control at all.
